The power of change

I just noticed how my life has changed, and for the better. About a year ago, when we moved countries, I decided to use change to force more change (it makes it easier according to studies).

I’ve never been one to worry much about things, so this is not a change fueled by either fear or ambition, but I’ve come to understand two things:

1. That bets that have more potential upside than upside are bets you should make. You might be wrong often, but if you are right even more often, then the small gains compound over time.

2. That the cheapest way to make life-changing bets, as they often require consistency over intensity, is to form good habits.

So here I am, a year later, it is about 9:30 am and I just realized how my morning is almost unrecognizable. I woke up and immediately grabbed a glass of cold water, turned on the music to something energizing, opened the windows to get the light in and looked at the sun for a little (sets your circadian rhythm, even better if you can go for a walk out). Then morning exercise, then a hot shower. While at it, use the shampoo that helps regenerate the hair, end with a cold shower to shock the body into action.

Skip breakfast, since restricting calories helps health and longevity. Then take a pill to maybe extend longevity and a vitamin supplement that has some of the recommended stuff. Now I’m typing this a little slower than usual because I’m trying to improve my typing technique to become more effective (good trajectory so far, but still paying the learning curve).

I’m not sure all of these small bets will pay off, but the investment is pretty low, and there are no clear downsides to balance out (as opposed to the more expensive or more involve self-improvement strategies). Time will tell. But regardless, it’s been an interesting ride, and if nothing else, the attempt has made me more curious and willing to try new things. What other opportunities might be there is life?
